What we collect, and what we do not.

The short version

We do not sell, rent, trade or exchange donor information with anyone, including other charitable organizations.

Payment details are collected by our payment processor on pages the processor hosts and serves. Your card number never reaches this site.

This site uses cookies and third-party analytics to measure how it is read. That measurement is kept separate from the gift record, and we do not use it to work out who an individual visitor is.

What we collect

When you write to us

Your email address, the name you sign, and the contents of your message. Correspondence is kept as a business record. Writing to us does not add you to any mailing list.

When you make a gift

Payment details are collected by Stripe, Inc. on a page Stripe hosts, under Stripe's privacy policy. We do not receive and do not store your full card number, your bank account number, or your online banking credentials. What reaches us is the record of the gift: your name, email address, billing address, the amount, the date, the payment method type, and the last four digits of the card or account. For a recurring gift we also hold the schedule and the mandate recorded when it was set up.

When you read the site

Serving a page requires your device to request it, so the technical information every web request carries — your IP address, the page requested, the time, and your browser's user-agent string — reaches the content delivery network that serves this site and the analytics service described below. Those records operate and secure the site and tell us how it is being read. We do not use them to identify you.

Cookies and analytics

This site uses cookies and similar technologies, some set by us and some by the third-party services we use to run and measure it. They fall into three categories:

• Necessary. What is required to serve the site, remember a preference you have set, and keep the site secure.
• Analytics and measurement. Services such as Google Analytics, which record which pages are read, how a visitor arrived, roughly where in the world they are, and what kind of device they used. We read this in aggregate.
• Campaign measurement. If we run a campaign to reach donors, directors or research collaborators, the platform carrying it may record that a visit to this site followed.

The particular services change over time, which is why this section describes categories rather than a list of names. What does not change: none of it is combined with the gift record described below, none of it is sold, and we do not use it to work out who an individual visitor is.

You can block or delete cookies in your browser, and analytics providers offer their own opt-outs. This site works without any of it.

Payment pages are on the processor's own domain. They set cookies of their own, governed by the processor's privacy policy rather than by this page.

Why we keep gift records

Gift records are kept because a charitable organization is required to keep them, not for marketing. Three separate obligations depend on the same record:

• Written acknowledgment. Section 170(f)(8) of the Internal Revenue Code requires a written acknowledgment stating the amount, the date, and whether any goods or services were provided in exchange. We cannot issue one without knowing who gave what and when.
• The annual information return. Contribution totals are reported on the return the Foundation files each year, which is a public document. The schedule listing individual substantial contributors is filed with it and is not part of the copy open to public inspection.
• Public-support testing. The breadth of an organization's support, meaning how many distinct people gave rather than only how much came in, is what section 509(a) measures. That computation is made from the gift record.

Gift records are retained under the Foundation's document retention and destruction policy. Correspondence that is not part of a gift record is kept only as long as it is useful, and is deleted on request.

Who else sees it

Four categories, and no others:

• Service providers who need it to do the work. Payment processing, banking, bookkeeping, email and file storage, website hosting and analytics, and the accountants, auditors and lawyers who prepare and review our filings. They are bound to confidentiality and may use it only for that work.
• Government, where a filing, a subpoena or a law requires it.
• Anyone you tell us to. If you ask us to coordinate with your advisor, your donor-advised fund sponsor or your employer's matching program, we will.
• A successor organization, if the Foundation ever merges with or transfers its assets to another charitable organization, which the Articles permit only to an organization with charitable purposes.

Nothing is sold or rented. No donor list is exchanged with another organization.

Recognition and anonymity

We do not publish your name without your written permission. No donor wall, no annual report listing, no press release naming a giver, unless you have agreed in writing to that specific use.

You may ask to be anonymous, and we treat that as standing until you tell us otherwise. Anonymity cannot mean that no record exists: the gift is still recorded in our own books and reported where the law requires. Your name stays out of anything we publish, not out of the accounts.

Email

Email about your own gift — the written acknowledgment, a receipt, a change to a recurring gift, a refund — is part of the transaction and is sent to every donor.

We also offer an email list carrying news about the Foundation's work and its published results. You are added to it only if you ask to be. Every message on it carries a way to unsubscribe that takes one click, and the list is not shared with anyone.

Your choices

Write to hello@clarida.org. On request we:

• tell you what we hold about you;
• correct anything that is wrong;
• delete what we hold, other than records we are required to keep, and tell you which records those are;
• stop a recurring gift, which is covered in the terms;
• record that your name is never to be published.

We answer within five business days.

Children

This site is not directed to children, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 13. If you believe a child has sent us information, write to hello@clarida.org and we delete it.

Where information is held

In the United States. The Foundation is a Colorado nonprofit corporation and its service providers are United States companies.

This site is directed to donors in the United States. Gifts from outside the United States are accepted; if you are giving from abroad, write to give@clarida.org first — see the terms.

Changes to this page

A revised version appears here with a new effective date. If a change materially affects what we collect or who sees it, we say so on the page rather than leave you to compare two versions, and we email donors on record.
